India's crude oil imports fell 8.9% in July on back of a sharp decline in oil product demand, according to latest data released by the Petroleum Ministry on Friday.
Crude oil imports at 7.656mn tons in July was 8.9% lower than 8.405mn tons crude imported a year ago. This was primarily due to 5.8% dip in petroleum product consumption to 8.795mn tons when compared to 9.339mn tons of July 2004.
The fall in oil product demand was mainly due to a massive 9.1% dip in diesel demand to 3.097mn tons. LPG and petrol consumption were almost flat at 842,200tons and 702,100tons, while naphtha sales fell 11.4% to 1.068mn tons. Import of petroleum product was up 37.4% to 989,200tons on higher imports of cleaner diesel. Exports too rose 6.9% to 1.182mn tons.
During April-July, crude oil imports fell 6.7% to 31.04mn tons as against 33.271mn tons in the same period the previous fiscal. Oil product demand was 3% lower at 36.448mn tons. Diesel, India's mainstay fuel, showed a 3.1% dip in consumption at 13.349mn tons in April-July.
While petroleum products imports showed a 82.5% rise to 3.626mn tons, exports rose 8.2 to 5.273mn tons in first four months of current fiscal. -->
